You may like a holiday that incorporates some history and luxury. Turkey can offer many opportunities for both, and Canakkale is one destination worth considering.
Gallipoli and the Dardanelles
Since ancient times, this area of the coast has been fought over again and again. The strategic value of the area is self-evident from any casual inspection of the map.
Perhaps one of the best-known conflicts arose during the First World War and the Gallipoli campaign, when the allied armies attempted, unsuccessfully, to invade Ottoman Turkey and knock it out of the war. The resulting battles were futile for the allies and resulted only in vast casualties. It is sometimes overlooked that Turkey also suffered hugely in the defence of its territory, with both sides sustaining casualties estimated at over a quarter of a million each.
Today the area is peaceful and poignant with memorials, exhibits and displays. The battlefields are beautifully preserved and are a testament to the Turkish people’s recognition of the suffering of the men of all nations during this horrific episode.
Canakkale is well positioned as a base for exploring the area, and there are some good hotels around providing everything from budget to luxury. Turkey is very proud of the heritage of this region and if you love military history, a visit here is a must.
Troy and Homer
The story of Troy goes back around 2900 years, although the events themselves may have taken place around 3300 years ago. Today, few people can fail to have seen or heard something of Homer’s epic tale. Interestingly, for centuries the tale was dismissed as legend but then, in the 19th century, the ruins of the city associated with Troy were discovered.
Troy isn’t one city but in fact a succession of ancient cities stacked on top of each other. It has to be said that compared to many other historical and archaeological sites in Turkey, Troy doesn’t have many breathtaking ruins, but that really isn’t the point. One can’t help but be a little awed when walking through the streets that may once have echoed to the footsteps of Paris, Hector, Priam and Helen of Troy.
Other attractions
If you’ve had your fill of history, this area also has some lovely beaches and plenty of other attractions. There are also some great opportunities for enjoying a little luxury. Turkey has some great golf and fitness hotels and some of these can be found in the Canakkale area.
